JR East: Iiyama Line

A newly-built DMU local train passing under cherry trees in full bloom between Kami-Imai and Kaesa Stations on the Iiyama Line. The line runs along the valley of the Shinano River, one of the longest rivers in Japan, linking Nagano and Niigata Prefectures. It snows heavily in this region and the railway was the only means of transport in winter until modern road networks were built. Further downstream near Ojiya Station, where the line joins the Joetsu Trunk Line, there are two huge hydraulic power stations feeding JR East's Tokyo suburban trains.
